Position Summary

The Senior Board Member is a key leadership role within The STE(M)² Hub’s Board of Directors, providing strategic guidance, oversight, and mentorship to help the organization fulfill its mission. Senior Board Members bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and leadership to the board, helping shape the organization’s strategy, governance, and impact.

This is a volunteer, unpaid position that offers a unique opportunity to influence the direction of a growing organization and make a lasting contribution to expanding STE(M)² opportunities for underrepresented communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Provide expert advice and guidance to the board and executive leadership on strategic priorities, organizational goals, and long-term planning. Help evaluate and strengthen the organization’s programs, initiatives, and partnerships to ensure alignment with the mission and vision.
    Actively participate in the development of policies, strategies, and plans that support the organization’s growth and sustainability.

  • Governance and Oversight: Ensure the organization adheres to governance best practices, nonprofit compliance requirements, and ethical standards. Exercise fiduciary responsibility by reviewing financial reports, budgets, and other key documents to ensure the organization’s financial health. Evaluate risks and opportunities to ensure sound decision-making and long-term organizational stability.

  • Mentorship and Leadership Development: Serve as a mentor to Junior Board Members, providing guidance and fostering their professional development in governance and leadership. Offer insights and support to the Board Chairperson and Executive Director, assisting with complex challenges and opportunities.

  • Advocacy and Networking: Act as an ambassador for The STE(M)² Hub by promoting its mission, programs, and impact to external stakeholders. Leverage personal and professional networks to identify opportunities for partnerships, funding, and strategic collaborations. Represent the organization at events, meetings, and other public forums to build awareness and support.

  • Board Engagement: Attend and actively participate in board meetings, committee meetings, and other organizational events. Provide thoughtful contributions to discussions, offering expertise and insights to guide decision-making. Serve on at least one board committee or task force, contributing to specific projects or focus areas.

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Passion for STE(M)² education and commitment to advancing equity and inclusivity in STE(M)² fields.

  • Demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role, preferably within a nonprofit, educational, corporate, or STE(M)²-related organization.

  • Deep understanding of governance principles, strategic planning, and organizational development.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to dedicate time, energy, and expertise to the organization’s needs.

  • Expertise in one or more areas relevant to The STE(M)² Hub’s mission, such as STE(M)² education, fundraising, nonprofit management, corporate partnerships, or community engagement.

  • Existing connections within the STE(M)², philanthropic, or nonprofit sectors to support networking and advocacy efforts (preferred but not required).

  • Experience serving on a nonprofit board or similar leadership group (preferred but not required).

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly board meetings (virtually or in person).

  • Complete annual board member training (virtually or in person).

  • 8–12 hours per month, including board meetings, committee work, and event participation.

  • Be available for occasional time-sensitive matters or urgent consultations.
