Position Summary

The Junior Board Member position is an exciting opportunity for graduate students, young professionals, or emerging leaders passionate about STE(M)² education to contribute to the governance and mission of The STE(M)² Hub. Junior Board Members bring fresh perspectives, creative energy, and a willingness to learn while supporting the board’s initiatives and organizational goals.


This is a volunteer, unpaid position that provides a unique chance to gain governance experience, network with professionals, and make a meaningful contribution to expanding the skilled STEM & Medical workforce in underrepresented communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Board Participation: Attend and actively participate in board meetings, providing input on discussions and decisions that align with the organization’s mission and goals. Serve on at least one board committee or task force, contributing to specific projects or focus areas such as fundraising, events, or program development. Collaborate with board members and organizational leaders to support strategic planning, governance, and program initiatives.

  • Advocacy and Outreach: Act as an ambassador for The STE(M)² Hub, promoting its mission, programs, and impact within your networks and community. Support the organization’s advocacy efforts by engaging with stakeholders, attending events, and representing The STE(M)² Hub in approved public forums. Bring new ideas and innovative approaches to help expand the Hub’s reach and visibility.

  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Assist in fundraising efforts by helping to identify potential donors, sponsors, and grant opportunities. Participate in events and campaigns to raise awareness and financial support for the organization. Leverage personal and professional networks to help secure resources that support the organization’s mission.

  • Learning and Professional Development: Develop a deeper understanding of nonprofit governance, STEM² education initiatives, and community impact through exposure to board operations and mentorship from senior board members. Proactively seek opportunities to learn from fellow board members and contribute to organizational discussions with curiosity and enthusiasm.

  • Organizational Support: Help execute board initiatives, including event planning, community engagement, and program implementation. Provide assistance as needed with administrative tasks, research, or special projects aligned with the organization’s goals.

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Passion for The STE(M)² Hub’s mission and commitment to advancing equity, innovation, and education in STEM² fields.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively in discussions and collaborations.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and contributing to nonprofit governance and organizational development.

  • Dependability and accountability in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and fulfilling responsibilities.

  • Experience or interest in STE(M)², education, nonprofit work, or advocacy.

  • Creative problem-solving skills and a willingness to bring fresh ideas to the table.

  • Networking and relationship-building skills to support outreach and resource development.

  • Familiarity with fundraising, community engagement, or event planning (preferred, but not required).

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly board meetings (virtually or in person).

  • Complete annual board member training (virtually or in person).

  • Commit approximately 6–8 hours per month, including meetings, committee work, and event participation.

  • Be available for occasional time-sensitive matters or urgent requests from the board.
