Commitment: 8 -10 hours per month

Position Summary

The Board Treasurer will serve as a key member of The STE(M)² Hub’s Board of Directors, overseeing the financial management and sustainability of the organization. This role is vital to ensuring responsible stewardship of funds, maintaining transparency, and supporting the organization’s mission.


The Board Treasurer will work closely with the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and the Executive Director to ensure accurate financial reporting, develop budgets, and contribute to strategic financial planning. This volunteer position is ideal for individuals with a background in finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial management who are passionate about promoting equity in STEM and Medicine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Oversight: Monitor the organization’s financial health and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Budget Management: Lead the development and approval of the annual budget in collaboration with the board and leadership team.

  • Accounting and Reporting: Oversee accurate bookkeeping, financial reporting, and the preparation of financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annually).

  • Transparency and Compliance: Ensure the organization adheres to nonprofit financial best practices, including audits, filings, and tax compliance.

  • Fund Management: Monitor income and expenditures to ensure alignment with the budget and organizational goals.

  • Fundraising Support: Collaborate with the board and fundraising committees to track and manage donations, grants, and sponsorships.

  • Financial Planning: Provide guidance on long-term financial strategies, including building reserves and managing cash flow.

  • Board Education: Present financial updates at board meetings, educating members on the organization’s financial standing and any key financial considerations.

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Passion for the Mission: A commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM and Medicine.

  • Financial Expertise: Experience in financial management, accounting, budgeting, or related fields (CPA certification is a plus but not required).

  • Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills with the ability to track and manage multiple financial priorities.

  • Knowledge of Nonprofit Finances: Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards, tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990), and financial reporting (preferred but not required).

  • Collaboration Skills: Ability to work effectively with board members, committees, and community partners.

  • Strategic Thinking: A forward-looking perspective to help guide long-term financial decision-making.

  • Technology Skills: Proficiency with financial software, spreadsheets (e.g., Excel), and accounting tools.

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly board meetings (virtually or in person).

  • Complete annual board member training (virtually or in person).

  • Provide financial updates and reports during board meetings.

  • Dedicate an estimated 8-10 hours per month to financial oversight, reporting, and collaboration with leadership.
