Commitment: 10-15 hours per month

Position Summary

The Board Chairperson will serve as the primary leader of The STE(M)² Hub’s Board of Directors, providing strategic direction, governance oversight, and fostering collaboration among board members. This role is crucial in ensuring the organization’s mission is effectively executed, and community impact is maximized. The Board Chairperson will lead discussions, represent the organization at external events, and engage stakeholders to advance our goals.

 

As a volunteer position, this role is ideal for an individual passionate about equity in STEM and Medicine, with a strong background in leadership and governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Provide vision and direction for the board and the organization, ensuring alignment with the mission.

  • Governance: Oversee board operations, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards while implementing best practices in nonprofit governance.

  • Strategic Planning: Lead the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan in collaboration with the board.

  • Meeting Facilitation: Organize and facilitate board meetings, ensuring productive discussions and effective decision-making.

  • Community Engagement: Be a spokesperson for The STE(M)² Hub, building relationships with community partners, donors, and stakeholders.

  • Fundraising: Lead fundraising initiatives and engage board members in identifying and securing resources to support the organization’s mission.

  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor board members and committee leaders to foster their development and engagement.

  • Advocacy: Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM and Medicine through advocacy and outreach efforts.

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Passion for the Mission: A deep commitment to advancing equity and opportunity for underrepresented individuals in STEM and Medicine.

  • Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a leadership or governance role, preferably within a nonprofit or community organization.

  • Strategic Thinker: Ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans, balancing organizational needs with community impact.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and written communication abilities.

  • Collaboration Skills: Experience working effectively with diverse teams and building consensus among stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of STEM/Medicine: Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities faced by underrepresented communities in these fields (preferred but not required).

  • Board Experience: Prior experience serving on a board of directors is a plus but not mandatory.

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly board meetings (virtually or in person).

  • Complete annual board member training (virtually or in person).

  • Participate in committee work as needed (e.g., fundraising, governance, or strategic planning committees).

  • Dedicate an estimated 10-15 hours per month to board responsibilities, including preparation, meetings, and outreach activities.
